Exposed Electrical Cable: Risks and What to Do Right Away

An exposed electrical cable, visible, without insulation, hanging or in plain sight on a wall, ceiling or junction box, is not a cosmetic detail to fix whenever there is time. It is one of the most direct electrical risks there is: accidental contact, short circuit, fire. And in commercial spaces or shared areas of a condominium, it is also a risk that falls on whoever manages the space.

Why it happens

Unfinished construction or renovation work. Cables left waiting for a switch, socket or light fitting that has not been fitted yet. Usually temporary, but dangerous while it lasts.

Worn insulation. Old cables, exposed to sun, damp or rodents, lose their protective sheath over time until the conductor is visible.

Improvised wiring. Extension leads fixed with tape, cables run under a rug or held with staples. Temporary fixes that become permanent.

Physical damage. A cable cut, crushed by furniture or damaged by nearby work, left exposed with no one repairing it right away.

The real risks

Electric shock. The most obvious risk, for anyone who touches the cable, but also for cleaning staff, children, pets or customers in a shop.

Fire. An exposed conductor that comes into contact with flammable material, damp or another conductor is one of the most common causes of electrical fires.

Legal liability. In commercial spaces and shared areas of a condominium, an exposed cable that causes an accident is not just a fault. It is a documentable maintenance failure, with implications under Portugal's Lei n.º 14/2015 and the property's insurance.

What to do right away

Until the electrician arrives, there are three things you can safely do:

  • Do not touch the cable, even if it looks dead. An exposed cable can be connected to a live circuit with no visible sign of it.
  • Cordon off the area, with simple signage or by blocking access, especially in shops, offices or shared areas with foot traffic.
  • Switch off the circuit breaker, if you can identify it safely, or the main breaker on the panel if in doubt.

Never try to tape over the cable, cover it or tuck it behind furniture as a fix. That hides the risk, it does not solve it.

Why it is different for a business or condominium

In a home, an exposed cable is a risk to fix. In a shop, office or condominium, it is also a matter of liability. If someone gets hurt and there is no record of maintenance or of the problem being corrected, the legal exposure is greater. This is exactly the kind of fault a preventive electrical maintenance plan is meant to catch before it becomes an incident.
